With the background provided by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the recorded voice of Enrico Caruso, Masquerade in Vienna" proves to be a pleasant enough bromide for thesis-writer headaches. Its advertised "delicate dallying" is mostly delicate, but an ingenious plot and capable acting compensate is any disappointment that might be felt of that account.

Supposedly based on an actual "scandale amourouse" in pre-war Vionna, centers around a handsome artist who does sketches for the less respectable magazines. His portrait of an indiscreet but fashionable lady, clad only in a muff and a mask, is published by mistake, and all Vienna is agog. To conceal her identity, he invents a name for her.

Almost concealed by this carnival gaiety and charm is a polished satine of Viennese high life. The gossipy grande dame who longs for the less discreet scandals of the good old days and young wife who doesn't shiver with only a muff for protection, are digs at a frivolous society.
