Immediate construction of a traffic circle at the Cambridge end of the Larz Anderson bridge is proposed in a bill filed today with the clerk of the Senate by Senator Arthur F. Blanchard.
Because of the late filling the petition must go to the legislative committee on rules for admission. Senator Blanchard stated today that his reason for filling the bill at this time was that the committee on metropolitan affars, of which he is a member, has agreed to report another important measure in which he is a member, has agreed to report another important measure in which he is greatly interested. That is a plan drawn by the engineers of the metropolitan district commission for a traffic overpass and traffic circle underneath the overpass, at the Cambridge end of the Cottage Farm bridge.
Senator Blanchard has discussed his bill with members of the committee on metropolitan affairs, who have agreed that increased traffic which will be attracted to the Cambridge side of the river, by the construction of the Cottage Farm bridge overpass, will necessitate the circle at the Larz Anderson bridge, for traffic towards Brighton and Newton.
Cost of Construction of the circle proper is estimated at $35,000, with an additional expenditure of $20,000 for necessary changes in the Boston Elevated station at Boylston Street and Memorial Drive. Some land must be taken from Harvard College, in front of Eliot House, across the Drive, at Weld boat club, and a portion of park land to the west.
The entire cost of the proposed improvement will be met by appropriation from the state highway fund, and there will be no cost to Cambridge.
