Thanks to the genial weather and almost complete lack of snow, the Maintenance Department has saved over $11,000 this winter, Rogers B. Johnson '17, Superintendent of the Department, admitted yesterday. Whereas the University grounds received $8,000 worth of brushing, snow-shoveling, plowing, and sanding last winter, only $650 has been necessary this winter.
The energies of a diminutive snow-removal crew have been expended mainly in sanding icy walks this year, or clearing drains of slush. No icicles have broken or punctured roofs; no exposed washbowl plumbing in Hollis and Stoughton has frozen up. This accounts for a further saving of $4000. According to Johnson, zero temperature is necessary to freeze the more ancient Yard plumbing.
