Almost exactly 50 years since he first played in Boston as a boy of 11, Joseph Hofmann will present an anniversary recital in Symphony Hall Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Hofmann was enthusiastically received by a large audience when, on November 28, he gave his jubilee concert at the Metropolitan Opera House, where he had first been heard in that city.
Born in Poland in 1876, he began to learn the art of music in babyhood, and as a small boy studied with Anton Rubinstein. His career commenced when he was nine years old. Mr. Hofmann has composed music in large and small forms, and has written books on piano playing.
Like Artur Schnabel, he no longer bothers to practise with any regularity. He claims he did plenty of practising in his youth to last him all his life. Mr. Hofmann's favorite avocation is inventing mechanical gadgets.
