The Crime

A story that is alleged to be gospel truth, comes to us from our special correspondent in Madrid, and revives our practically non-existent believe in the goodness of human nature. We had always thought that Fascists were unanimous in their unwavering fidelity to the "cause", but now we are beginning to have our doubts.

It seems that Franco's aviators were bombing a loyalist munitions storehouse, and for several minutes the air was full of death-dealing missiles, which fell in large numbers all around the arsenal, but somehow or other failed either to hit their objective or even to explode when they crashed on the ground. When the zero hour was over, the loyalist troops rushed out to investigate and carefully opened all the "dud" explosives that had fallen. Inside each projectile were large quantities of sand, and in each was a polite note saying, "These bombs won't explode. Greetings to our dear comrades from their German friends!"
