Dimitri Mitropoulos, the Athenian conductor, is for the second season the mid-winter guest conductor of the Boston Symphony, and will lead the orchestra in Sanders Theatre tomorrow evening as well as the concerts of Friday, Saturday, and Monday in Boston. He will be remembered for the excellent impression which he made last year and for his unusual methods of conducting which include some extraordinary vertical manoeveurs.
His program for Cambridge and for the week-end concerts in Boston is the same, and consists of five numbers, two of which are his own arrangements. The Prelude and Final Air from the opera "Dido and Aeneas" by the seventeenth century English composer, Purcell, arranged by the conductor, is to open the program. Following that is another Mitropoulos orchestration -- Beethoven's String Quartet in C sharp minor, opus 131.
Three works by modern Italian composers are also to be played: a "Prelude Glocosco" by Castagnone, Respighi's Toccata for Piano and Orchestra in which Mr. Mitropoulos will be the soloist, and the Second Suite from Alfredo Casella's opera, "La Donna Serpente"
Hindu Ballet
The Hindu dancer, Shan-Kar, and his ballet are to give performances is Symphony Hall on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Shan-Kar is a truly remarkable dancer, and his interpretations combine beauty with a strange Oriental fascination. The musical accompaniments are not the least interesting part of his performances, and he (or rather his publicity agent) beasts that six hundred instruments are used.
Unfortunately, this worthy offering coincides on Saturday afternoon with another excellent recital, that of the popular English pianist Myra Hese. Her varied program includes a Sarabande, Minuet, and Air by Purcell, Schubert's Sonata Opus 143, Schumaun's "Papillons", and Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonats. The latter is one of her particular triumphs.
The second concert in the Hotel Vendome by the Flute Players Club will be held on Sunday afternoon. This chamber music group is offering a most intersting program in which Casadesus, the Fresh pianist, is to be soloist.
