To James Bryant Conant '14, A.B., Ph.D., LL.D., honorary fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, member of the American Chemical Society, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Imperial Academy of Science, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma XI, and Alpha Chi Sigma, came last night the French Legion of Honor--and not only that, but the rank of Commander as well.
As a fitting climax to the Tercentenary year, the French Government took occasion to award this honor to President Conant, as well as to promote four other distinguished Harvard members of the Legion from Chevaliers to Officers, it was learned yesterday.
George D. Birkhoff '05, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Julian L. Coolidge '95, Professor of Mathematics and Master of Lowell House, James B. Munn '12, Professor of English and Jerome D. Greene '96, Director of the Tercentenary were those promoted.
Eight professors were also made members of the Legion as Chevaliers: Bliss Perry, Edward B. Hill '94, Edward W. Forbes '95, Roger K. Merriman '92, Ralph Barton Perry, Edward A. Whitney '17, former President of the CRIMSON, Kenneth J. Conant, and George Harold Edgell '09, who has recently become Director of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
