THE MAIL

To the Editor of the Crimson:

So much has been said for and against the restoration of the old Hollis Hall pump, a few more words on the subject may not be out of place at this time.

First of all, the need of a source of drinking water in the Yard, not only at Commencement, but at all times, is so obvious as to need no discussion. Dr. Barney '00 and Professor Morison '08, are to be congratulated that largely through their efforts, the College has not installed a modern drinking fountain, which would be the simplest and most economical thing to do, but is placing as far as possible, a faithful replica of the old pump.

The position of the new pump as first planned, without any bearing on the old location, was naturally very disconcerting to the more antiquarian-minded Alumni, but thanks to the interest of Mr. Durant, the Business Manager, and Mr. Johnson, in charge of the Maintenance Department, much time has been spent in locating the old well, so as to place the pump in exactly the same position as the old one.

The question of using the City water rather than the water from the old well, was also a cause for much discussion, and tests were made of the well water by the College. These tests showed that the water was not pure enough to risk infection by users of the pump. So present plans are to sink a tank in the upper part of the old well, which will be filled by the less historic but purer water from the City mains.

The well itself will not be disturbed or hurt in any way, the pump will be a faithful replica of the old one in form and position, and both the modern and antiquarian groups should be more than satisfied. John P. Brown
