Four of Harvard's leading scholars in the field of American History have been pressed into service to write a "Guide to American History" as replacement for a similar influential work prepared in 1912 by three noted Harvard historians of an earlier day.

To compile this work the Harvard Committee on Research in the Social Sciences has tendered a grant to James P. Baxter, 3d, professor of History; Samuel E. Morison '08, professor of History; Arthur M. Schlesinger, professor of History; and Frederick Merk, associate professor of History.

Their projected volume will replace that of Albert Bushnell Hart Edward Channing, and Frederick J. Turner.

Grant for the project is one of three, totalling $2,000, made public today by the Committee. During the present year $90,000 have been allotted Faculty members by the committee from funds given by the Rockefelley Foundation in the fields of history, government, economics, and sociology.

The two other grants announced today are for studies in human behavior and in judicial power. Pitirim Sorokin; professor of Sociology and Chairman of the Department of Sociology, will prepare a study of time budgets as part of a broad survey of conditions among the unemployed of Massachusetts by Faculty members.

Also under the Committee's grant, Wolfgang H. Krans, instructor is Government, will write a report on "Judicial Review, Judicial Dissent, and the Modern Republic."
