THE VAGABOND

May 30th.--Comes the woman betimes to wake me, saying a man with big nose of great business is here to see me. So, I, very quick, up wondering who it be; but soon found out and vexed at my heart to see it be only the good Samaritan, Max Keezer. So we to do great bargaining and I very merry to hear him talk. But I not to give in to his offerings for I have heard his next step is to flip for the amount of the disagreement; and I did wait for this; and, bless my soul, it did come. But I, very foxy, would not do it after all. So he to walk out, but soon, waving his hands and all a bubble, did decide to give in at "a sacrifice". I much amazed how foxy I be.

Thence with -- to the stables and I to ride "Thunderbolt"; she to take "Buttercup". But I so bad, I soon to ride "Buttercup" and she the other. But very merry and I to recite this poem:

"The lady trotting from the West

Takes the jumps and looks her best,

And proud as Juno on a beast

Scorns the lady from the East.

The horses, made less delicate,

Though apt to deprecate the ride,

Bow with breeding as they pass

And take the chafing in their side."

By and by back to the Tower and much troubled again with my eyes. I do fear that one day I must forbear to write my journal it taxing my sight exceedingly, and then again I know my days are few, but God prepare I will continue until the year is done. Thence to bed, sleeping on my side, being very sore.
