With the Freshman track season over, one of the most disastrous seasons that the Yardlings have ever gone through since time began, it will not be inappropriate, nevertheless, to take stock and see what they have to offer in the way of Varsity material for next year.
It is an admitted fact that graduation is going to tear well nigh unfillable holes in the Varsity forces. Among those who will run their last races in the I.C.A.A.A.A. Meet and in the Olympic sectional trials--not many will go beyond them--are Milt Green, who has been good for three wins in any meet, Gerry Downer, Norm Cahners, Bob Hall, and Mal Millard.
The nucleus of next year's staff will be Bill O'Connor, Al Northrop, Bill Schmidt, Bert Litman, Emile Dubiel, Henry Marey, Charley Worth, and Bob Woodward. These runners can not be disregarded by any team.
But if the Crimson forces are to continue to win steadily as they have for the past three years they will have to draw heavily upon the Freshmen. Foremost among these is Bob Randall, who was good for four, count 'em, four, wins last Saturday against the Blue Yardlings, if they have a Yard.
On Saturday he started his work with a win in the high hurdles, continued it in the lows, won the broad jump, and then topped his afternoon's performance off with a victory leap in the high jump just to get a good appetite for supper. It is surely not too much to say that this athlete will be a factor on next year's team.
Second among the outstanding performers for the Freshmen is their captain, Al Hanlon, a crack middle distance man. Al's home stretch sprints have been one of the most beautiful pieces of track work seen in the Stadium this year. Usually off the last corner last, Hanlon has been consistent in overcoming his adversaries leads to come home a winner. He will be another factor next year when he puts on a Varsity jersey.
Add to this pair George Gardner. The hand he got in the Stadium last Saturday for his fifty piece of running in the 3000-meters was surpassed only by the runner who came in last in the same race five minutes after the announcements were all in.
