The First Lowell House Party seems to have been a success. Parents expressed their enjoyment of the weekend and their satisfaction with living conditions at Harvard. The apparent success of a similar plan at an Oxford college inspired Julian Coolidge in this, his latest innovation. When he first proposed the House Party several years ago, it was found to conflict with certain hotel codes of NRA relative to the housing of paying guests.

There is considerable speculation over the contents of the package sealed in 1836 which Mr. Conant is to open at the Tercentenary Celebration. Yesterday, while thumbing through CRIMSONS of the last century we came upon an account of the sealing of this package written in 1860 by President Quincy. Mr. Quincy had been president of the University in 1836. His description follows:

"Blank books were presented for the signature of the Alumni and more than eleven hundred recorded their names. These books were bound under the direction of Robert C. Winthrop, Chief Marshal of the Day, and form a quarto volume, which is to be preserved in the Archives of the University until the next Centennial Celebration.

H.T.A.L. was a thriving organization in this University in 1886. Although its membership drives did not greatly swell its ranks, this group enjoyed the favor and moral support of many faculty members and many more faculty wives. Its meetings featured speakers of the calibre of William James and Edward Everett Hale.

In a statement to students, the president of the Harvard Total Abstinence League said:

"Membership means total abstinence from all intoxicating liquor as a beverage, as long as one is connected with the University; but members are at liberty to resign at any time."
