To the Editor of the Crimson:

We, the undersigned, wish to petition a more thorough investigation of the conditions by which the second semester membership fee in the Commuter's Center is arbitrarily placed on the student's term bill.

It is our belief that the conditions of membership did not make it sufficiently clear that the membership fee is ten dollars a year, with allowance for withdrawal in the middle of the year on no account provided. The issue has become even more confused by the reduction in February of the yearly fee from ten dollars to five dollars. This may be justifiable in order to allow new members to join without undue burden, but, in this case, it seems a little unreasonable to withhold this same privilege from first semester members. The misunderstanding has been enhanced by making provision for an installment payment of the dues. In requesting the continuation of membership in the second semester, the committee in charge definitely used the word "renewal" in regard to our membership status. This seems inconsistent with their later attitude of obligation to continue membership.

If this condition has occurred through a desire for increased membership in the Center by compulsion, we feel it is unjustifiable and contrary to Harvard policy. If it has arisen from some other purpose, we hope that this purpose will be made public and the conditions of membership will be clearer and more fully explained in the future. Sincerely,   Daniel D.
