With only a week and a half before the Princeton-M.L.T. race, the Crimson Varsity eight is doing its two miles in the Basin pretty regularly. This year Charlie Whiteside has altered the prescription he gave the 1935 Varsity and is leaving his first boat strictly alone, giving them a lot of work with a promise of no mid-season changes. Although no races have been run off yet, it is quite possible that the boat as it has rowed for the last week will be the one to meet Yale on June 19.
Chace Inspires Confidence
The boat as it now stands has four Sophomores, three Seniors, and only one Junior. An informal race between the first and second boats over the course yesterday afternoon showed definitely that such a hands-off policy has already produced a better crew than was rowing at this time last year. Stroked by Chace, timer of last year's Freshman shell, the first eight shows a great increases of smoothness and power over that of Drury's crew at the same time last year. Chace has an air of confidence and although the boat checks badly, it does not seem likely to disintegrate at a high beat with him setting the pace.
Yesterday's race demonstrated beyond a doubt that the best men are now in the Varsity shell. Eliel at 5 and Art Beane at 2 are finished oars, both capable of lasting the four mile grind on the Thames. Number 4, Erickson, another Sophomore, likewise appears to be built with a nickel-plated endurance, although not in the class with Beane and Eliel in blade work.
Crew Still Needs Finish
The crew is not yet smooth. Yesterday the entire boat was jumping the stroke a fraction of a second. Even Chace's competence at stroke failed to prevent a certain amount of splashing and rushing in the informal race. Added to this is the fact that at the pull through, balance is disturbed, making recovery difficult, by the tendency of the shell as a whole to swing with the oar, leaning out of the vertical. If these faults can be eradicated before the race, Whiteside will have good crew, but not by any means to judge from present appearances, a remarkable one.
