17th. Slept but troubled at my stomach all the last part of the night, and yet I know not why 'less it be from sleeping so far up in the air (I being on the top floor of the Chrysler Building) for I have heard tell of persons in skyscrapers getting sick from the swaying of the building; but I would not swear this was my case for also now I remember I did eat a lobster for dinner: Therefore up, and soon comes----and I to apologize for being caught breechless but he did not mind and took to telling me about a lecture he heard recently by an Harvard alumnus wherein much was said about the grave of John Harvard in Charlestown Cemetery being in a deplorable condition and not being tended properly for years. This did make me very sore at my heart and I vowed to bring it to the attention of Mr. Green and the tercentenary authorities when I returned; for if it is true it is indeed a sorry reflection on us all.
Whereupon, afternoon coming on, we to lunch at Maison Louis, which serves delicious unsalted butter, and by and by I alone to stroll along Fifth Avenue and was much surprised to meet---- whom I have not seen in five years and all in one breath she tells me she is married now and I ought to see the African Art Exhibition and the Flower Show and I ought to see her "Junior" too. We to see Junior, and the little one did want to come so much we all three to the Flower Show.
Lord, I have never seen no many busy women and so many pretty flowers. And I was quite amazed to see an actual ten foot waterfall in one garden and live love birds here and there. And why they do not fly away I do not know. Thence we up to the fourth floor, and I was glad at my heart the strike is somewhat over, and we did not have to walk; for already I did have to carry Junior. And here on one side was an exhibition of fertilizing machines and on the other a cafeteria: in the center a Persian garden. A real Persian garden too! And I was sorely tempted to lie beneath the bough:
"Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,
A Flask of Wine, A Book of Verse--and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness--
And Wilderness is Paradise enow."
But there was Junior. So I took to asking the little Committee-woman about the garden and "Were not love birds really out of place in a Persian setting." But all she did say was; "My dear boy, there are love birds everywhere." Then and there I knew Spring had come.
Thence here and there until 5:30 whereupon by water--where I did meet a few of the boxing team who were still a little punch drunk--to Cambridge. And I was glad at my heart to learn that Professor Kittredge on Wednesday is speaking at Dunster House on "the Pedant".
