Basketball Looking Up
Prospects for the basketball team are considerably better this year than they were last. With Penn looming as the most formidable opponent on the varsity's schedule, unofficial observers have hopes of an auspicious season for a strengthened Crimson aggregation.
The loss of only one man through graduation, Raymond P. Lavietes '36, has enabled Coach Wes Fesler to build up a great reserve strength which is more than ample insurance against injury or the toughest kind of competition.
Top Notch Material
An abundance of top notch material will keep every man on his toes to retain his position on the first string. eleven potential starters returning from last year's squad will be bolstered by the addition of three sophomores who played on last year's championship freshman team: Reino R. Grondahl, Fred, W. Heckel III, and Ulysses J. Lupien, Jr. Though Coach Fesler has not chosen any definite starting lineup he has divided the ten most likely starters into two separate quintets which will function as interchangeable units throughout the season.
Two Starting Fives
Though neither of the following lineups is definite at this early date one of the starting fives is composed of Lewis A. McGowan '38, forward; George F. Loweman '38, forward; Captain Ernest A. Gray Jr. '37, center; Leavitt S. White '37, guard; and Lupien. The other quintet consist of Grondahl, forward; William W, Shirk '38, forward; John H. Herrick '38, center; Heckel, guard; and Arthur R. Snell '38, guard. In addition, Jacob H. Kuhn '38, Arnold 8. Liman '38, Jack L. Mason '37, and Thomas W. Stephenson '37, will se action. john L. Dampeer '38, regular last year, is laid up with a bad knee and is not at present reporting for practice. Football men reported for the first time yesterday, however, and will undoubtedly cause a change in the above lineups. Vernon H. Struck '38, who played first string quard last year, will be included in one of the above quintets.
