Lining Them Up

Everybody's running around, some of them know where they're going, most of them got lost, but out of the general situation in emerging what in expected to be a fair to better cross country team. The boys have been trying out new courses in Brookline which are expected to fit them for these demned hills in New Haven. Jaakko Mikkola, who is trying to form the team with some of his best men on pro or concentrating on fall track, himself admitted that he got tired just walking over the course.

The trouble with the Brookline course is that nobody knows what the route is. The Freshmen went out with orders to run for twenty minutes and were unable to find their way back for an hour. The Varsity went out with orders to run a half hour and within twenty minutes wound up from where they started.

To get down to more pertinent facts, Hayden Channing, the captain who finished third last year in the Holy Cross meet, which will be contested next week on Ocober 12 along the River course, has been out for the last few days with a cold. By the time the meet rolls around, he'll be in there again, it is expected, but not in what can be officially declared fighting trim. Another casualty is George P. Gardner, who has come up from last year's Freshman team, which he captained, and is currently down with a bad case of blisters. It's still problematical whether he'll be ready for the Purple or not.

To counterbalance the gloomy side of the picture, two new comers to the squad are showing a decided amount of promise. The first of these is John A. Day, a senior, who is out for the first time. In the same category and one who is showing a similar fund of promise, is Alden Haupt '38.

Among those who have lived up to or give promise of living up to promise are Cyrus C. Decoster, Jr. '37, John Erhard '38, and Henry Marcy, who gets a special boost from Jaakko. Francis Rivinus, a dogged worker from the Junior class, still has some work to do before he hits the top, while Charley Worth, always a dependable performer, is plodding along with the best of them.
