Two new fangled hurdles have made their appearance on Soldiers Field, the brain children of Jaakko Mikkola, the track coach, and which he has patented. If they are accepted by the H.A.A., they will be put into general use for meets and practice.
The first is a hurdle equipped with rollers on the bottom so that when it is hit by a hurdler passing over it, it will roll over easily rather than offering any resistance to him. Another feature of this hurdle, which is designed to meet practice needs, is a strip of canvas which replaces the top bar. Thus any hurdler who clips it will not have his ankle skinned.
The second hurdle is a combination low and high hurdle and is designed to obviate the use of two different sets of hurdles in track meets. The top bar is placed into the sides of the hurdle on a pair of runners so that it can be raised or lowered to the desired height just as one raises a window.
