At least 274 men have applied for House rooms this year and have had their applications turned down. This winter, for the first time, all the rooms were signed up. (The only suite now vacant is unoccupied because illness has prevented the owner from returning thus far).
Of the 274 men who were refused admittance, 191 were undergraduates. Thirty more were transfer students and the remainder was composed of graduate men who wished to continue living in the House they had occupied last year. Although there are .53 of these listed as wanting House rooms, it is thought that there are many more who would have liked to get in but failed to apply, realizing the slim chances of being accepted.
The figure on men turned down for this fall shows an increase of 17 over last year. When there were 257 who had to be refused. Many of these were students who had to have cheap rooms, and, when none were available, decided to live at home. Others took refuge in the boarding houses about the Square and some went into the other College Halls such as Cleverly and Dudley.
It is hoped by University Hall that the restriction on the size of the Freshman class will tend to decrease the great demand for House rooms. It seems probable, however, that until another House is built several hundred will find themselves out in the cold every year.
