THE CRIME

We had always assumed that President Conant was a capable man--or the Overseers would not have elected him President--but we were convinced that he may be classed among the great when we heard this story late last spring.

Harper Woodward resigned his position as secretary to President Conant to join a law firm in New York and numerous candidates to take his place made their appearance before Mr. Conant.

One of these men, who had never met the President before, as soon as he walked through the door, found himself confronted with the question, "Can you throw a man down stairs?"

There was a little hesitation, perhaps that is why he was ultimately unsuccessful in his quest, and then the applicant stammered, "Why, yes, sir, I guess so."

"Fine!", said Mr. Conant, "Can you make him like it?"
