Plans for the establishment of two permanent funds for the award of scholarships to deserving students of Spanish were outlined last night at a meeting of the Harvard Spanish Club in Phillips Brooks House. At the same time, Jose K. P. deVaron '88 was elected secretary to succeed Thomas G. Allon '87.
The first of these funds will provide for the award of an annual cash prize to that student who, in the opinion of the Spanish Department, has attained the highest distinction in Spanish literature. The second will afford substantial financial aid to men of restricted means who are majoring in Spanish. The club hopes to be able, in future years, to establish a scholarship for study at the University of Madrid.
Money for the creation of the proposed scholarship funds will be raised through a dance recital to be given by the Pauline Chellis Dance Group on Wednesday evening, May 15, at 8.30 o'clock in Brattle Hall.
