After pinning the Bulldog, in his lair last Saturday to finish a moderately successful season, the Varsity wrestlers are in the last throes of training for the New England Intercollegiates, to be run of today and tomorrow at M. I. T. Cliff Gallagher has chosen six men to win honors on the mat, four of the entrants being Varsity lettermen of this season.
Howie Stoddard, who yesterday was elected captain for next year, is entered in the 135-pound class. Although he had no part in the Intercollegiates last year, he has had two years of Varsity wrestling and one as a Freshman. Brooks Cavin goes into the 145-pound class with two years of collegiate experience behind him, and is expected to keep the reputation he has already made for himself. Until last Saturday he was undefeated, but met his Nemesis in the person of Eli Captain Hull, who eked out a decision.
Armstrong Out With Injury
An injury sustained in the Yale meet will keep Don Armstrong out of competition for the rest of the year. He was thrown off the mat onto the floor, striking his head, and it is believed that he suffered a slight concussion. In spite of the handicap, he managed to win a decision over his opponent.
To take Armstrong's place in the 165-pound class, Coach Gallagher has entered Jerry Piel, a Sophomore who has wrestled regularly with the Varsity as a 155-pounder. Bill Davis, captain of the Freshmen two years ago, is being moved up from his normal 145-pound class to fill the vacancy left by Piel at 155 pounds. Davis hasn't competed in any Varsity meets this year, but won the 155-pound title in the University championships last week.
Captain Dick Emory, who reached the semi-finals of the Eastern Intercollegiates last year, is grappling at 175 pounds. He is undefeated this year, having won by five falls and three decisions. Another possible entrant is Leonard Klein in the 126-pound division.
Freshman Entrants
The full Freshman team is entered in the tournament, with the exception of Gordon, 118-pounder: Bosler, Daughaday, Captain Ames, Gosline, Harkness, Glueck, and Bill Glendinning. Besides winning their Freshman numerals, Bosler, Harkness, Glueck and Glendinning have added to their honors by taking the titles in their respective classes in the University championships.
