Winthrop Wins Championship By Trouncing Kirkland, 18-6

Bringing the House season to an end, Winthrop defeated Kirkland 18-6 to win the House championship and gain the right to meet Yale on Saturday, November 15. At the same time Lowell and Dunster were muddling along to a scoreless tie in the traditionally final game of the season.

Kirkland was pretty definitely outplayed in yesterday's game but not until the second half did Winthrop's supremacy become too noticeable. In this stanza the Puritans scored twico, each time on sparkling runs.

The first score of the game came when Duby Brookings smashed through the line in the first period.

In the second half Kirkland came back strongly and evened the count when Wiley E. Mayne '38 broke through the right side of the line, outsprinted the secondary, and shook off the safety man to cross the line standing up after a 75-yard jaunt.

For the rest of the third period the teams sawed back and forth, each one intercepting several passes. In the fourth period the Winthrop break came when Johnson shook off his trailers and crossed standing up after a 30-yard trip. The final score came in the closing minutes of the fray when Tex Kelley intercepted one of the Deacons passes and behind perfectly formed interference made the last touchdown of the afternoon.

The Dunster-Lowell fray went on for four periods with no one being able to cross either goal line. The Dunster-Lowell is the one House game which has become coated over with a fine patina of tradition. Each team went out to give its all but the efforts of both were nullified and the football that goes to the winning team will have to be given in duplicate this year.

Winthrop has lead all the way in the House League this year and was never seriously threatened until the last half of the season. As the season began to draw to a close it was seen that Kirkland had a mathematical chance to win if it was able to pass both Lowell and Winthrop.

Lowell was easy enough but the light, fast backfield of Winthrop has yet to lose a House Championship since play started in 1930.
