HARVARD AND COLUMBIA IN DEBATE ON THURSDAY

FRESHMEN WILL HOLD DEBATE AT UNION COUNCIL MEETING

Swinging into the winter season and a rather stiff dose of competition, the Debating Council will debate with Columbia on Thursday, at the Institute of Arts and Sciences in New York. Robert Sullivan '38 and Jay W. Kaufman '38 will speak for the Crimson forces against the Lions from Morning side Heights.

Harvard will defend the affirmative side of the question: "Resolved, that the United States should participate in all of the measures of the League of Nations against Italy." This same topic will furnish the subject at a discussion meeting on Wednesday when Robert B. Applebaum '36 and George J. Weber '36, the alternates for the Columbia debate will lead the discussion, affirmatively and negatively, respectively.

Kendric N. Marshall '21 Secretary of the Union, has announced that at the next meeting of the Union Debating Council Thursday, Morgan Preston and R. A. Solomon will debate the affirmative side of the same question; Daniel Gilmore and Thomas Bean, the negative.

After the formal debate there will be a general discussion for all who attend. Each man will be allowed three minutes on either side of the question. In order to discover the most promising candidates for the Freshman Debating team, each man who is interested will be allowed a chance to speak in one of the formal debates. The man to speak will be chosen at random.

All upperclassmen, who wish to try out for the spring debates (expect the Yale, Princeton debate and the spring trip) will report Tuesday, December 10, at a place to be announced later with a five minute speech prepared on either side of one of the following questions: "Resolved, that the Agricultural Adjustment Administration has served the best interests of the American farmer" or "Resolved, that the Social Security Legislation of the last Congress is detrimental to the best interests of the American people." There will be separate trials for the spring trip and the triangular debate on February 27 and April 9, respectively.
