When the House Masters permitted Freshman to cat in the Houses for a brief period before filling their applications last year, they instituted an experiment which should be extended. Development of this policy will not only give a man greater leisure in which to judge the merits of his future place of residence but will also enable him to associate with upper-class friends and thereby feel closer akin to the College.

It is true that the Houses possess minor differences in atmosphere rather than basic variations in individuality. Yet a man will feel more satisfied with his choice if he possesses first hand evidence of this fact. Danger from proselyting will be inconsequential as long as the cross-section spirit pervades University Hall. Difficulties from administration will be at a minimum as long as inter-House slips are utilized.

Favorable action on the present petition, requesting a meal a week during a three-month period, should provide adequate opportunity for a leisurely consideration of the Houses. If the House Masters believe that the Freshman should have the chance to eat with upper-classmen, however, there is no reason why the privilege should not be extended for the entire year.
