"Gammer Gurton's Needle" to Be Given; Glee Club Will Sing-Eliot, Adams Preparing Entertainments

While Adams and Eliot make ready for their celebrations next week, members of Lowell House launch an extensive program of Christmas entertainment in the dining hall this evening.

Immediately following a 7 o'clock dinner the House glee club, under the direction of Bartram Kelley 2G, will render several English madrigals and a Bach chorale. The singers are: Stewart Bates 1G, Edward M. Brooks '37, Courtlandt Canby '36, John C. Cort '35, John H. Eric '37, James E. King, Jr. '36, Edward A. Kracke, Jr. 2G, John S. Lang '35, Karl E. Schevill '37, Frederick B. Tolles '36, and Frederick M. Watkins, Junior Fellow.

Old English Comedy

After the choral activity the Thespians will take the stage with a five-act presentation of "Gammer Gurton's Needle," the first full length English comedy, which also features the fine old drinking song, "Backe and Syde Go Bare."

Alan S. Downer 1G is directing the play. The cast follows: Diccon, Edward H. Turner '36; Hodge, Walter S. White '36; Tyb, Edward V. Malcolm '35; Gammer Gurton, Ralph Lazzaro '36; Cocke, Edmund S. Morgan '37; Dame Chatte, C. Robert Moore '35; Doctor Rat, Donald Armstrong '35; Mayster Baylye, Robert Warner '35; Doll, George W. Wickersham, II '35; Stage Manager, D. Stuart DeBard '36.

Elephants to Play Shakespeare

On Wednesday Eliot House will act Shakespeare's "Henry IV." Theodore Spencer, instructor in English and resident tutor in the House, and Harry T. Levin '33, Junior Prize Fellow, will direct the action, while John C. Haggott '35, president of the Dramatic Club, will be stage manager. As a further attraction, Roger B. Merriman '96, Gurney Professor of History and Political Science, and Master of Eliot House, is expected to star in a leading role.

Satire by Gold-Coasters

Monday evening will see the Adams House actors in a spicy after-dinner satire, written principally by G. Raymond Dennett '36 and Gladwin A. Hill '36. The play contains a takeoff on the House and tutorial plan, a student and biddy scene, and even President Conant will be impersonated on the boards.
