INSULL OFF STAND

Chicago, Nov. 5--The cross-examination of Samuel Insull, Sr., in his $143,000,000 mail fraud trial ended today on a note of high-pressure salesmanship and the defense moved on to other witnesses intended to establish that collapse of the Insull empire was the result of conditions which affected business universally during the depression.

The white-haired Insull, on trial with 16 co-defendants, including his son, Junior, left the witness stand wearily, granting a slight smile to the jury which must decide his fate.

New York: Herbert Lehman, a friend of President Roosevelt's appeared tonight virtually certain of victory over Robert Moses, his Republican adversary in the gubernatorial race. Sen. Royal S. Copeland, Dem., seemed reasonably certain of reelection.

Reports tonight indicated that the Republicans would win between 10 and 25 seats in the House but might lose at least four in the Senate. Experts predicted that the Democrats would maintain control of both Houses in the 74th Congress
