THE CRIME

An opened-mouth Freshman was being shown around the Yard on the second day after his arrival by his cousin, the Senior. Presently they found themselves before the Widener Library where the following conversation took place.

"Why what a large building is that" said the Freshman. "What is it?"

"That is the Library, cousin, where they keep all the books."

"How wonderfully interesting. How many books are there."

"Two million, replied the Senior quickly, and if they were taken down, all of them from their eleven miles of shelves, and placed book upon book, end to end, they would form an unbroken wall around the Yard Fourteen feet high, and one foot thick."

"How marvelous," said the Freshman, and they passed on.
