Noted Author and Librarian Dies at Home in Nova Scotia

Benjamin Rand '79 Philosophical and Economical Authority

Benjamin Rand '79, librarian in the Harvard Philosophical Library until his retirement in 1932, died last night at the home of his brother, Fenwick Rand, in Canning, Kings County, Nova Scotia, where he was born 79 years ago.

A noted author, Mr. Rand was the holder of several Harvard degrees, gaining his A.B. in 1879, A.M. in 1880 and Ph.D. in 1885. His works include a biography of the Third Earl of Shaftesbury, as well as philosophical and economic treatises.

He is the son of Ebenezer Rand, who for 25 years was chief collector of customs for Kings County in Nova Scotia. Mr. Rand had taken numerous trips to the old world, where he gained material for his writings.
