Hayes 500 Percent American

The national commander of the American Legion, one Edward A. Hayes, has again attacked Pacifism, Communism, un-Americanism (whatever that may be), and Radicalism. At the Miami jamboree he has also showed his displeasure with the American Veterans Association and the National Economy League because of their efforts to maintain the credit of the United States by bridling the porkbarrelism which these professed patriots wish to engage in to such an almost unlimited extent. In spite of their Americanism, which they loudly and self-righteously proclaim, the Legionaires would like to see the money in the Treasury portioned out to them in a manner more befitting a Roman holiday, than the efforts of a grateful government to give relief to its deserving and American protectors. But of course the Legionaires are no more the protectors of the credit of the United States than they are the protectors of the American Veterans Association or Soviet Russia or the National Economy League.

The attack of Mr. Hayes on Pacifism, Radicalism, Communism, and un-Americanism reveals a certain mentality that can be best characterized by one word--limited--which is the same one that best characterizes the Legionnaires view on the bonus question, incidentally. The naive commander who is such an expert at catchwords is wise enough not to attempt to define what is un-Americanism; for it is a word terrible in proportion as it is meaningless. Mr. Hayes deserves notice for attacking the Communist Menace; certainly neither a majority of Americans or Legionnaires desire Communism in this country. The Legionnaires might consent if they did all the sharing; but because it does not look as if this would be likely, they are opposed to Communism. It is re-assuring to fell that Washington and his men at Valley Forge, all true Americans, were opposed to Communism. Radicalism is far worse than Communism because it can mean anything; and the word has the same initial letter as two other un-American words, Red and Russia. The Legion is opposed to Pacifism, which is also bad and un-American, because if we were all pacifists we would, never have any more American Legions. Thus the number of drunks periodically having a merry time at conventions in different parts of the country would be markedly reduced.
