New York, Sept. 30--The St. Louis Cardinals today won the National League pennant, wrestling it automatically from the New York Giants when the latter lost their final game of the season to Brooklyn, 8 to 5.
The crowd, witnessing the Cardinals' victory, came to cheer Dizzy Dean, greatest pitcher in Gardinal history, in a game that was expected to decide the fate of the pennant.
The crowd, sensing a pennant victory, came equipped for a celebration. Horns, large tin cans, cow bells, and other noise makers assisted the vocal chords. And in the ninth inning when the score board flashed New York's defeat, giving the pennant to the Cards, bedlam broke loose.
Dean was the most joyous of the players. As Adams fouled out in the ninth to retire the Reds with three men on. Dean rushed to Delancey to obtain the final ball as a souvenir, shook his hand, shouting, Well, Bill, we play in the World Series."
The players rushed into their dugout to avoid the crowd that jumped the rails to congratulate them. Police held the crowd back.
Dizzy, forgetting his fine victory today looked forward and asked Frisch if he could pitch the first game in the series-Frisch said "maybe."
Frisch, as he changed his uniform for street clothes, told the United Press. "This was the greatest finish I have ever seen."
