Announcement of the winners of two prizes given annually to outstanding students in the field of History and Literature was made late yesterday by the Committee on Degrees in the field.
John Barzillai Rackliffe '34 of Newton, was awarded the History and Literature Prize of $50, given by an anonymous donor to the Junior who shows the greatest promise among men concentrating in the division. Philippe Dur '35, of Toronto, Canada, was awarded the Barrett Wendell Prize given to the Sophomore who, in the opinion of the Committee had made the most notable progress in the year. Dur's prize consisted of a specially bound edition of the works of Montaigne.
Rackliffe, under the conditions set forth, must spend his money before his graduation in the purchase of books of any description, current fiction excepted. On completion of the purchase he must send a list of the books, with a description of the editions and the prices paid, to the Committee on Degrees.
The awards last year were made to H.H. Bissell '33, and D.J. Boorstin '31.
