Fast-Skating Crimson Puckmen Down Eli in Overtime Tilt, 4-3

Tally by Saltonstall Completes Yale Victory, Giving Crimson Mythical Championship

A Saltonstall goal started by a rebound from the prolific stick of Baldwin after two minutes and 15 seconds had elapsed in the first overtime period clinched the Yale series in favor of the Crimson, and settled the mythical United States hockey championship for Harvard when the Varsity sextet triumphed in the Garden last night 4-3.

A baffling array of shots at both goalies, and five-man attacks with mad scrambles in front of the nets kept the spectators on their feet the whole evening. Not until the final bell sounded the end of the hockey season was the outcome certain for the game was a continual see-saw of scores.

First Period

Before the audience had been seated and the teams had settled down to the evening's work, the Crimson offense swung into action. Putnam picked up a Yale pass on his right wing, started up the ice, but was cornered by Noyes and Parker. A quick pass to Saltonstall on his left and a relay to Baldwin speeding down the left lane relieved the situation so quickly that Baldwin's shot took Snyder, in the Blue net, by surprise. On a hard shot from deep left wing Baldwin planked the rubber into the far corner of the net for the first tally at 57 seconds. The period ended without further score, with the Crimson taking no chances of losing its scanty lead.

Second Period

The opening of the second stanza boded ill for the Cantabrigians for Yale turned on the offense full force. It was only a question of time when the Bulldog would score since the third Crimson line gave little protection to deGive in the goal. Cookman, Yale substitute wingman, crashed through with the equalizer out of a mix-up in front of the Harvard net when the clocks said 6.45. Not content at a tie count the Elis kept up the battering of the Harvard citadel, and after several Yale shots had hit the posts Fletcher took a pass from Noyes that lured deGive out of the cage and converted in the time of 10.05.

Harvard came back six minutes later to tie up the count again at 2-2. The second line contributed its bit to the evening's scoring when Pell skated down the ice with Wolcott at center, overskated the goal, and passed out to his mate in scoring position. A backhand shot finished off the work.

Third Period

Three minutes and 30 seconds of the third canto had gone by when Fletcher collected on a pass in front of the cage.

With only four minutes and four seconds left to play Baldwin crashed through again to give the Crimson another bolt into the Blue. A weak shot by Watts outside the Yale defenses dribbled through the legs of Snyder, and Baldwin stepped in to beat the goalie to the draw.

Overtime

With the score again knotted, the teams went into the overtime and both outfits opened up wide their offenses, sending five men down the ice in an attempt to clinch the affair. Harvard got the jump when Baldwin shot from his left wing, after the Crimson had kept the puck in Yale territory for a few minutes. Snyder saved, but the rubber bounded back to the waiting Saltonstall, who had nothing in the way of a score. The time was 2.15. Yale's endeavors to pull the game out of the fire were useless, and the laurels went to Harvard.
