In the first time-trials of the season for the Varsity and Freshman track candidates yesterday afternoon, A. S. Pier '35 won the long distance cross-country event and E. F. Bowditch '35 made the best time in the short run.
Although Bowditch unofficially led the field, J. F. Morse '35 won the short run in the official time trials in 10 minutes 12 seconds. John Wiggins '33 and R. C. Aldrich 2E.S., placed second and third, respectively, at four second intervals.
R. S. Play-fair '36, captain of the Freshman Cross Country team, was only two seconds behind last year's captain. Pier, in the long race. These two runners and J. S. Hayes '33 completely out-distanced the rest of the field, their nearest competitor, C. F. Woodard '35, being more than a minute behind them.

4.4 mile event--A. S. Pier '35, 23 min., 58 sec.; R. S. Playfair '36, 24 min.: J. S. Hayes '33, 24 min., 2 sec,; C. F. Woodard '36, 25 min,. 9 sec.; J. P. Scheu '35. 25 min., 11 sec.; and A. K. Philbrick '35, 25 min., 15 sec.
