Taking the negative side of the question, "Resolved, That the NRA is a Menace to the American Form of Government," Asa E. Phillips, Jr. '34, and Gordon C. Streeter '34 won a debate held by the University Debating Council in the Upstairs Common Room of the Union last night. The affirmative side of the question was argued by Lewis Perry, Jr. '36, and Thomas H. Quinn '36. Forty Freshmen attended the meeting which had as its purpose the organization of the 1937 Debating Council.
N. W. Mattis, Instructor in Public Speaking, spoke on the development of debating, and expressed a hope for the time when collegiate debating will have "a real influence on public opinion."
A. E. Phillips, President of the Council, spoke of the value of debating in furnishing men with ability to "think on their feet." In addition, he offered the opportunities of excellent coaching, the experience of radio debates, and the facilities of a "permanent home" for debating by next year.
