In the semi-weekly practices of the Varsity basketball squad, held at the Hemenway gymnasium, Coach Wesley Fesler is placing stress upon the fundamentals of the game. At every practice session, the players are put through intensive drills in accurate passing and foot work, and in careful guarding.
This is the first year that fall practice has been held. In other years, men have not reported for basketball until winter, and since there was so little time to prepare for the opening game, attention was given to the development of plays instead of to the fundamentals. To offset this condition, Coach Fesler issued a call for candidates early in the school year, and practice has been held two evenings a week since October 3. About November 12, the squad will shift its workouts from Hemenway to the New Indoor Athletic Building.
Prospects for the coming season are encouraging. Among the men returning from last year's Varsity squad, Captain Joseph F. Ferriter '34, Jack R. Levan '34, William F. Henderson '34, and Richard C. Boys '35 are the most outstanding. All these men played in the Yale game last year. The 1936 basketball team is also well-represented on the Varsity squad. George V. D. Comfort '36, former Freshman captain, is returning with his team-mates, Richard C. Ernst '36, James G. Grady '36, and Roger M. Silsby '36. These players were on the team which started against the Yale freshmen, and during the game, Grady and Comfort were the high scorers for Harvard.
As soon as the fall season is over, Charles J. Nevin '34, Richard G. Fletcher, Jr. '35, John H. Dean '34, and Harry K. Wells '34, will report.
