The University's latest purchase of land became known late Wednesday afternoon, when a deed to a piece of land between Gore and McKinlock Halls was recorded with the Middlesex South District Deeds, dated November 23, and being numbered 137 of that date. This latest addition to the University's land holdings completes Harvard ownership of all land along the nothern side of Memorial Drive from Eliot House to the Cambridge Electric Light Company, with the exception of a public playground between Dunster House and the Maintenance Department location.
Sale Delayed
It was learned that the University had for some time been contemplating purchases of this land, but that sale had been delayed until suitable price arrangements could be made. The deed was filed bearing @23 in documentary stamps, which indicates that the sale price was in the neighborhood of $23,000.
The land, the area of which is 4129 square feet, with the buildings thereon is situated at and now numbered 107 Plympton Street and 11 Riverview Avenue. Riverview Avenue is the short street running parallel to Memorial Drive and separated from it by a grass plot in front of McKinlock and Gore Halls. At present a portion of the University's newly acquired land is used for a residence: the remainder is devoted to a parking place used by residents of Lowell and Winthrop Houses.
Nothing was learned as to what will be done with new land. It does seem probable, however, that it will be used merely as a lawn immediately adjacent to Winthrop House. The land lying between Riverview Avenue and Mill Street now belongs to the University with the exception of the middle lot, which is still privately owned, but which the University will doubtless attempt to purchase.
