Hawaii, Honolulu, June 1--Dr. Arthur Lyman Dean, Harvard '00, was honored by the University of Hawaii here today at its twentieth annual commencement when the university biological building was renamed the Arthur Lyman Dean Hall. The fastening of a bronze plate to the building was a feature of the dedicatory exercises.

President for Thirteen Years

Dr. Dean, now retired from active service in the university, had served 13 years as president of Hawaii. He came here in 1914, when the university was but a small struggling college with 21 undergraduate students. When he retired in 1927 he had transformed it into a complete university with a student body, in all branches, of almost 1400.

Two years after his graduation from Harvard Dr. Dean took his degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Yale. He then joined the Yale faculty and remained there until he was called to Hawaii in 1914. For three years after his retirement Dr. Dean was a director of the experiment station of Hawaii Pineapple Canners, which is affiliated with the university. Since 1930 he has been a member of the executive staff of Alexander and Baldwin, a position which he still holds.

Dr. Dean also has achieved some scientific fame through his research concerning the use of chalmoogra oil in the cure of leprosy.
