Five debaters to represent Harvard in the trans-oceanic debate with Oxford some time in the first week in December have been selected on the basis of a competition. The five men who have survived the trials are are follows. P. H. Cohen '32, P. C. Reardon '32, and D. M. Sullivan '33; and as alternates, S. M. Peyster '34 and A. E. Phillips '34.
The debate is being run in split fashion, that is, one Harvard man and one Oxford man making up each side of the question. Then in the rebuttal, or 10-minute discussion at the close of the debate, Harvard will give a negative summary, while Oxford will summarize the affirmative arguments. This decision has been reached partly due to the fact that sentiment in America is more in the negative than in the affirmative, while in England the affirmative arguments for cancellation of debts have been more widespread.
