Starting on Monday, October 5, gymnasium classes will be held at 5 o'clock in the New Indoor Athletic Building and in Hemenway Gymnasium. The classes in the athletic building, open to all members of the University, will be led by Walter Nelson '31, who starts this year as a full-time instructor in the Department of Physical Education. John Wallen, director of Hemenway Gymnasium, will direct the classes in that building.
Those interested will meet Nelson and Wallen, on all week-days except Saturdays. The exercises will consist of "calisthenic drill and general all-around 'workout', packed into 45 minutes, and designed to alleviate any depression resulting from overwork.
It is hoped that graduate students will find the class an aid in keeping fit. Attendance is voluntary, and no signing up is required," said Nelson. These facilities have been offered at Harvard for the past 25 years, with an enrolment averaging over 100 men annually.
