After the closing bout of the New England Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships, the finals of which were held Saturday night at the Walker Memorial Gymnasium at M. I. T., Harvard emerged victorious over its four rivals to recapture the laurels lost last year to Brown for the first time since 1925. Leading with a score of 37 points, the Crimson was followed by Tufts with 23, M. I. T. with 13, Brown with 12, and Williams with none. Five members of the University team and four Freshman grapplers carried away championship belts.
Heavyweights Win
As usual, Harvard's heavy end, composed of J. F. Solano '30, C. D. Newhart '31, and Nathaniel Warner '30, upheld its share of the responsibilities, and came through with two falls and a decision victory to its credit.
Having shut Captain Stone of M. I. T. from a possible second place by injuries inflicted in the bout, Solano added another fall to his list of eight consecutive tumbles for the season. Although outclassed by the Crimson wrestler, Stone showed a stubborn resistance.
Captain Warner brought his season to a close with a clean slate when he twice defeated Richardson of Brown by falls.
However, the lightweight contingent was not without a champion. Arthur Klein '32 in the 125-pound class, provided perhaps the most thrilling bout from a spectator's point of view, and certainly the greatest upset of the meet, when he defeated Captain Stella of Tufts by a decision. Being the only returning champion of last year's inter-collegiates in which he won the 115-pound title, Stella has maintained, until last Saturday, an undefeated record of one year of Freshman and two years of University wrestling at Tufts.
Robertson Victor
The fifth victory for Harvard was scored by W. A. Robertson '31 in the 155-pound class when he threw Baldwin of Williams, the only representative from Williamstown to reach the finals, by a fall in four minutes, 12 seconds.
As Freshman competition is not fostered by the New England Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, it was introduced into the meet in the form of individual championships only.
