LOWES DELIVERS FIRST OF LECTURES AT OXFORD

K. G. T. WEBSTER ALSO VISITING ENGLISH UNIVERSITY

John Livingston Lowes, Higginson Professor of English at Harvard who is spending the current academic year at Oxford, has begun his series of lectures there, it was learned yesterday. Professor Lowes is lecturing at the English University as the first incumbent of the new George Eastman Visiting Professorship, established in 1928 by George Eastman of Rochester, New York.

The lecture which introduced Professor Lowes to his English audience was given on October 15 when a large audience heard him. Since that time he has lectured again, and will continue to speak at intervals throughout the year. According to advice from England, he has been elected a member of the Merton Common Room, a privilege which entitles him to attend the common dining hall of the college. It will be remembered that Merton is the college of Professor Heathcote William Garrod, who held the Norton Chair of Poetry here last year.

K. G. T. Webster '93, assistant professor of English, is also in Oxford now, it was learned. He is spending the first half-year abroad on leave of absence, and is now the guest of the Gilbert Murrays. Mr. Murray, the distinguished English translator and critic, was the first incumbent of the Norton Chair at Harvard five years ago.
