Boston is at it again. A few years ago a board of burly policemen "laboriously read and censured" Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy." This expedition won the ancient city a renewal of its already venerable fame. But it seems this was not sufficient, or at least the action was not rabid enough. This time "Candide", Voltaire's great philosophical novel has been seized by the Collector of the Port. The immortal work has been arraigned on the charge of "obscenity and obscurity." (Of course, it will surprise no one that M. Voltaire has been found obscure by such gentry as Collectors of the Port.)

We can see how the great City of Purity is working up. First it smote Dreiser, a contemporary, but for that reason not a sufficiently illustrious scalp. Hence it was found necessary to go back 170 years, to fasten upon an author who has indubitably stood the test of time. Shakespeare's turn is next, we see it coming! Daily Princetonian
