CREWS ENTER TRAINING GRIND FOR YALE RACES

CRIMSON EIGHTS SWEEP CHARLES REGATTA WITH BLUE

The defeat of the first University eight on Saturday by-both Penn and Navy demonstrates more clearly than before that the real hopes of Harvard crew this spring lie in the discovery of a stroke oar with form and stamina to send a crew over a four mile course. There is no doubt but that both the University crews lack only the pace-setters to raise them from the ranks of underdogs to the position of victors.

When the first crew failed to match the terrific sprint of its two rivals on the Severn last Saturday and breezed in nearly a length behind, there was a solid conviction in the minds of the spectators that a well directed finish by the Harvard oarsmen would have forced their opponents to crack, so close were they to the breaking point.

The crews will go into an intensive period of training for the next ten days prior to the departure for Red Top in about two weeks. Since the need for a stroke man is so pressing, it would not be surprising to see some hitherto unhalled oarsmen given an opportunity to set the beat. With P. H. Watts '31 a questionable factor when it comes to the endurance necessary for the long trial with Yale, and Swaim not showing the vital rythm a dark horse may walk off with the honors during the coming practice session.

The Harvard crews are as follows:

First University--Stroke, P. H. Watts '31; 7, W. T. Emmett '29; 6, B. J. Harrison '29; 5, Allerton Cushman '29; 4, F. A. Clark '29; 3, L. W. Dickey '30; 2, C. McK. Norton '29; bow, James Lawrence, Jr. '29; cox, L. L. Wadsworth '30.
