PEARSON SETS STROKE FOR WINNING OARSMEN

VICTORIOUS EIGHT TO FACE YALE HERE ON SATURDAY

In the first formal class crew race of the season on the Basin yesterday afternoon, the first Sophomore class crew stroked by R.W. Pearson '31 defeated the Sophomore crew stroked by J.E. Lawrence '31 and the Junior crew stroked by H.W. Sturges Jr. '30.

The race, scheduled to be rowed last Friday, was postponed on account of the sickness of men from two of the crews. Postponed first to this afternoon, it was run off yesterday when the Basin waters were found to be smoother than they have been for the last two weeks.

First Half Mile Close

The crews got off from the starting line and rowed over the first half mile of the course with all three crews abreast. Here Pearson's shell started to pull away gradually as rougher water was encountered, until it had a length and a half margin over Sturges' crew just beyond the Harvard Bridge. The strokes dropped to 29 and 28 as the water grew more troublesome, and the three boats continued downstream and across the finish line with the Sophomores three lengths ahead of the Junior eight, and Lawrence's Sophomore crew another length in the rear. The winning crew covered the course in 9 minutes, 50 seconds. This crew will row the winning Yale class crew on the Basin Saturday, afternoon.

The crews were seated as follows:
