BOXERS END FIGHT FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Conquers Cooke in Fierce Battle in 115-pound Class-Three Matches are Halted by Referee

Ten bouts at Hemenway Gymnasium last night comprised the finals of the University boxing tournament; they ranged all the way from dull exhibitions of clinching to slashing matches ending in referee's decisions, and completely satisfied the crowd of some 500 or 600 persons who turned out to see the event.

Both J. R. Mooney '31 and G. N. Burns '30 held on to their titles, though neither had an easy time of it. Mooney in the 115-pound class was pushed to the limit by Crispin Cooke '32, who won the first round easily by fast rushing. Mooney gained as the match went on, however, had Cooke dizzy in the second period and edged him out with hard blows in the final round. In the 145-pound group, Burns met stiff oppositions in W. P. Wadsworth '29 and won only by tiring him with heavy body shots.

The 160-pounders furnished the bloodiest bouts of the evening, with two technical knockouts in three, matches. In the preliminaries W. A. Robinson '31 took a terrific beating from R. A. Thomas '31, who drove him around the ring and rained blows upon him; in the other semi-final of the class, I. H. Light 2L likewise gained a referee's decision in the first round over R. M. Hetterly '31 with a barrage of shots that had Hetterly down twice in the minutes and staggering helplessly when the referee interposed.

When Thomas and Light met later in the evening to decide the title, both were tired from their first fights. Thomas gave a fine display of headwork by clinching and tieing up light's dangerous right; but the latter broke free often enough to land telling blows, and in the third round overwhelmed Thomas with driving punches.

G. H. Nawn '32, in winning his way through two hard matches to the 135-pound title, made two rallies that pulled the bouts out of the fire just in time. His second one, when he was pitted against J. W. Fellows '30, was especially notable.

The prize bout of the evening was in the unlimited class, where K. D. Robinson '30 defeated Elmer Meyer 1G. S. There was no stalling, they laced into each other with a flock of hard blows; the mix-up looked like a battle of siege guns. Meyer took the offense, and was far, ahead at the first bell; he started off the second round with a rush, but tired quickly, and was an easy target for Robinson's pounding.
