People using the sidewalk connecting Tremont and Mason Streets in Boston have been confronted this week with a sign announcing that a narrow strip of the pavement is the property of Harvard and that persons using it are legally trespassers.
It was learned yesterday from the Treasurer's office that the property was left to Harvard by a bequest of B. F. Keith made several years ago, and that the University owns a part of the sidewalk inasmuch as the building line extends five feet beyond the front of the present structure. According to law, a notice of ownership must be posted one week in every 20 years in order that property rights may be retained. No obstruction will be set up around the plot and no prosecutions will be carried out against trespassers.
