Teachers Offered Added Opportunity Under New Two-Year Program

Teachers and other students of education in the vicinity of Boston will be able to secure the degree of Master of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in several new ways, according to an announcement made yesterday by University authorities. The changes are in keeping with the recent decision to make the degree of Master of Education a work of two years time.

Under the new ruling, the total requirements for the degree is to be 16 half courses, the equivalent of two years' study. In addition to the work in the courses, candidates for the degree must take a general examination at the conclusion of their program of study, and also meet an apprenticeship requirement.

Credit for Outside Courses

The recent votes of the Faculty concern credit for courses taken at other institutions, credit for extension courses, and the admission of part time students to courses they wish to take as auditors. These changes are made to fit the needs of the students who are unable to take two full and continuous years of work at the school. A student who spends one full, continuous year in residence at the school may receive credit at the discretion of the Administrative Board for eight half courses of work done at another institution.

Part Time Students Receive Credit

Students whose work is done entirely on part time may combine courses taken during the academic year with those taken in the Summer School and Extension course. Only four courses, however, taken by extension will be credited under any plan.

The general examination will require a sequence of regular work, but the course credits have no necessary relation to the candidates's success in that examination. The scope and character of the general examination will be explained in a later announcement by the Committee of Examiners.

Under this new two-year program for the Ed.M. degree, teachers and prospective teachers are offered an unusual opportunity to secure a thorough preparation for professional service. Experienced teachers may meet the apprenticeship requirements by credit for their regular work in school positions.
