Appearing in the Harry Elkins Widener Room are a number of Bibles, prayer-books, and devotional books executed in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries.
"The York Manual" is a fifteenth century manuscript written in English and Latin and bearing the early musical notations for hymns. Other interesting volumes are a prayer book printed in London in 1634, including "Some particular formes of Prayer for the English Colonies and Plantations in New England, Virginia, etc." and a Bible which belonged to Samuel Johnson and contains several chapters in his handwriting. The designs for the illustrations of the latter work are taken from Durer's series of prints entitled. "The Apocalypse." Original impressions of this entire series are also on display.
