Winning the opening game on its new Phipps Field, the Yale polo team squeezed out a 5 to 4 victory over Harvard at New Haven on Saturday. The dedication of the field, put off four times on account of rainy weather, was finally accomplished in a close match in which the Crimson led until the final chukker.
J. P. Cotton Jr. '29 was the first to score, driving the ball between the uprights early in the first period. J. H. Phipps of Yale, a member of the family which donated the playing field, was the outstanding Blue horseman. He shot the first Eli goal in the second chukker, while L. A. Shaw '30 tallied for the Crimson. Cotton crashed the Yale defense for his second score in the third, giving Harvard a 3 to 1 lead.
A deadlock in the fourth period was followed by a long scoring drive from Captain. R. B. Burnett ocC, in the fifth. Then came a burst of speed from the Yale riders, who tallied twice off the mallets of O. M. Wallop and Captain F. C. Baldwin. In the final chukker, Yale tied the count and then drove home the winning goal, Wallop and Baldwin again being responsible for the scores. No substitutions were made throughout the game.
A large crowd of about 4000 people witnessed the match, which was played on a field wet from the morning's rain.
Yale won the outdoor series from Harvard as a result of this match, the second Blue victory this spring.
